NIOX Flex is the successor of NIOX, the first tailor-made Nitric Oxide Monitoring System. NIOX Flex measures NO in exhaled air according to ATS/ERS equipment recommendations and is cleared by FDA, for routine clinical use in asthma patients (1), (2), (3).

NIOX Flex measures exhaled nitric oxide to evaluate responsiveness of anti-inflammatory therapy in asthma patients. Put simply, NIOX Flex lets you see more than your asthma patients can tell you.

NIOX Flex uses the high sensitivity and specificity of a chemiluminescence gas analyzer, together with integrated software, to accurately measure NO molecules at very low concentrations.

Despite the advanced technology employed, the device is very easy to use and is suitable not only for adults, but also for children age 4 and up.

Intended Use

NIOX Flex measures Nitric Oxide (NO) in human breath. Nitric Oxide is frequently increased in some inflammatory processes such as asthma. The fractional NO concentration in expired breath (FENO) can be measured by NIOX Flex with assurance that such measurements are repeatable and according to guidelines for NO measurement established by the American Thoracic Society.

Measurement of FENO by NIOX Flex is a quantitative, non-invasive, simple and safe method to measure the decrease in FENO concentration in asthma patients that often occurs after treatment with anti-inflammatory pharmacological therapy, as an indication of the therapeutic effect in patients with elevated FENO levels. NIOX Flex is suitable for children, approximately 4–17 years, and adults 18 years and older.

FENO measurements provide the physician with means of evaluating an asthma patient’s response to anti-inflammatory therapy, as an adjunct to established clinical and laboratory assessments in asthma. NIOX Flex should only be used by trained physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and laboratory technicians. NIOX Flex cannot be used with infants or by children approximately under the age of 4, as measurement requires patient cooperation. NIOX Flex should not be used in critical care, emergency care or in anesthesiology.
