The NIOX Flex measurement procedure is not only easy to follow; it complies with the rigorous FE_NO measurement guidelines established by the American Thoracic Society (ATS) in conjunction with the European Respiratory Society (ERS) in 1999 and updated in 2005 (1).

1	Replace NIOX Filter.
2	Enter patient's name, ID and examiner's name.
3	Select Meter or Balloon view (for children).
4	While seated, patient exhales and then places NIOX Filter in mouth.
5	Patient inhales to total lung capacity over 2–3 seconds.	Inhalation of NO-free air prior to exhalation.
6	Patient exhales slowly, easily keeping constant flow with the aid of either the meter or the balloon.	Automatic control of exhaled flow rate to a constant 50 ml/sec, making it easier for the patient to comply. During exhalation closure of the velum prevents contamination of the sample with nasal NO.
7	Repeat until two valid FE_NO measurements are obtained for analysis.	FE_NO value is the mean NO level during a 3 second NO plateau. The mean value of two consecutive FE_NO measurements is the FE_NO result.
8	Results are available directly. Save and print report.	Standard results reported include: Patient data FE_NO values (2, 3) FE_NO average (ppb) NO output (nl/min)
